webpx
webpx is the command-line front end for Darnelix.Webp, a WebP codec written entirely in C#. Every
command — encode, decode, inspect, container editing, animation build and extract — runs on that managed
codec: no native code, zero runtime dependencies. The tool carries a small interchange layer of its own for
the raster formats it reads and writes.
Install
As a global tool:
dotnet tool install --global Darnelix.Webp.Cli
webpx --help
Or as a local tool pinned to one repository (recorded in its tool manifest, restored with
dotnet tool restore):
dotnet new tool-manifest # once per repository, if it has none
dotnet tool install Darnelix.Webp.Cli
dotnet webpx --help
Requires the .NET 8, .NET 9 or .NET 10 runtime.
Commands
| Command | Does |
|---|---|
webpx encode |
image → .webp (lossy or lossless, alpha, target size or PSNR, …) |
webpx decode |
.webp → image (pixel layout, scale, crop, flip) |
webpx info |
print the header features: dimensions, format, alpha and animation flags |
webpx mux |
set or strip ICC/EXIF/XMP, the animation loop count and background colour |
webpx demux |
list chunks and frames; extract metadata payloads |
webpx anim build |
frames → animated .webp |
webpx anim extract |
animated .webp → frames (+ durations) |
webpx version |
print the codec version |
Interchange formats
The codec is WebP-only, so the CLI carries its own readers and writers for PAM/PPM/PGM (PAM carries
alpha), BMP (24/32-bit), and headerless raw (needs --width/--height/--format). PNG and JPEG
are out of scope — pipe through another tool.
Global options
Available on every command:
--log-level <off|error|warn|info|debug|trace>— set the library log level (logs go to stderr).--quiet— errors only.--verbose— verbose logging.-h,--help— show top-level help, orwebpx <command> --helpfor a command's usage.
Exit codes
0— success.1— a data or I/O error (malformed/unreadable file, failed decode/encode).2— a usage error (unknown command/option, missing or invalid argument).
Errors are written to stderr; command output goes to stdout.
Examples
webpx encode photo.ppm photo.webp -q 90
webpx decode photo.webp out.pam
webpx info photo.webp
webpx mux photo.webp --set-exif exif.bin -o tagged.webp
webpx demux tagged.webp --get exif -o exif.out
webpx anim build -o anim.webp -d 100 f000.pam f001.pam f002.pam
webpx anim extract anim.webp -o frame_%03d.pam --manifest frames.txt

1.1.0 — Darnelix.Webp.Cli installs webpx, the command-line tool for the Darnelix.Webp codec, which it carries: no native code, zero runtime dependencies. Commands: encode (image to WebP, lossy or lossless, with alpha, a target size or PSNR), decode (WebP to image, with pixel layout, scale, crop and flip), info (header features), mux (set or strip ICC, EXIF and XMP; the animation loop count and background colour), demux (list chunks and frames; extract metadata), and anim build / anim extract (frames to animated WebP and back). Reads and writes PAM, PPM, PGM, BMP and headerless raw pixels. Exit code 0 on success, 1 on a data or I/O error, 2 on a usage error.
