DataStar.Tools

The DataStar command line interface. It builds deployment packages from source control, deploys them against Oracle or SQL Server, and generates reversal (rollback) scripts. Any build agent that can run .NET can run it, on Windows, Linux or macOS.

Install

dotnet tool install --global DataStar.Tools
datastar --help

The tool needs the .NET 10 runtime. This package holds no program itself: it names a package per platform (DataStar.Tools.win-x64, linux-x64, linux-arm64, osx-x64, osx-arm64), and the install downloads only the one for the machine it runs on. To install from your own feed, push DataStar.Tools and the platform package for every kind of agent you run.

Commands

--command-name (-cn) picks what to do. It defaults to release.

Command What it does
release Deploys a package against a target database.
reversal Generates a reversal package from existing audit data.
build Reads a deployment file and source control, and produces a deployable package.
inflate Turns data documents into the SQL they stand for.
definitions Lists, prunes, shares or inlines the definitions a workspace's documents point at.
merge git's merge driver for data documents and changesets.

For example, to build a package for a work item straight from the repository, with nothing checked out:

datastar --command-name build \
  --git-directory . \
  --build-file releases/TASK-123/TASK-123.xml \
  --database Microsoft \
  --output-directory artifacts/scripts \
  --package-directory artifacts/package \
  --package-file 'TASK-123.zip'
