DocWright.Ole

Read Compound File Binary (MS-CFB) containers and extract embedded OLE payloads.

A legacy .doc file, an encrypted OOXML package and an embedded object are all the same kind of container underneath — this package is that reader.

Add-on for DocWright.

Install

dotnet add package DocWright.Ole

Zero third-party dependencies.

Extracting an embedded payload

using DocWright.Ole;

using FileStream payloadStream = File.OpenRead("embedded.bin");
using OlePayload payload = OlePayload.Open(payloadStream);

Console.WriteLine(payload.Kind);      // PackagedFile, Embedding, ...

if (payload.Kind == OlePayloadKind.PackagedFile)
{
    // An OLE 1.0 packaged file carries its original file name.
    Console.WriteLine(payload.FileName);
}

Reading a compound file directly

using DocWright.Ole;

using FileStream file = File.OpenRead("legacy.doc");
using CompoundFile compound = CompoundFile.Open(file);

foreach (string entry in compound.EnumerateStreamNames())
{
    Console.WriteLine(entry);
}

When you need it

Most people do not install this directly — DocWright.Formats.Doc and DocWright.Cryptography both use it internally, and the main DocWright package brings those. Install it on its own when you want to inspect containers or pull out embedded objects yourself.

Hostile input

The reader treats its input as untrusted: directory and FAT traversal are bounded, and declared sizes are checked before anything is allocated, so a malformed or hostile container fails cleanly instead of hanging or exhausting memory.

Requirements

.NET Framework 4.8, .NET Standard 2.0, .NET 8.0 or .NET 10.0.

DocWright.Cryptography

Password-protected Office documents for DocWright: ECMA-376 agile and standard encryption (read and write), legacy Word 97 RC4 and RC4 CryptoAPI (read), and document-protection password hashes. Uses only the .NET base class library — no third-party cryptography. Digital signatures are a separate package, DocWright.Signatures.

DocWright.Formats.Doc

Legacy Word 97-2003 (.doc) reader for DocWright, including files encrypted with Office 97 RC4 or RC4 CryptoAPI. Read only — there is no .doc writer; open a legacy file and save it as .docx to modernise it. Most users should install the DocWright package instead, which includes this one.
