Quick start

Commands

init

dotnet elg init [--project <csproj>] [--locale <bcp47>]

Creates Properties/i18n/ with a sample config file and default locale folder. Auto-detects <NeutralLanguage> from the .csproj.

gen

dotnet elg gen [--project <csproj>]

Reads all JSON/JSONC files under each locale subdirectory, merges them into per-locale dictionaries, and emits Lang.g.cs (and optionally Lang.Locales.g.cs, Lang.{Module}.g.cs, Lang.Coordinator.g.cs).

add

dotnet elg add <locale> [--project <csproj>] [--force]

Copies all JSON files from the default locale into a new locale folder. The copy gets the configured line endings. Use --force to overwrite an existing folder.

check

dotnet elg check [--project <csproj>]

Checks every non-default locale against the default for missing and orphan keys. Also validates <SatelliteResourceLanguages> consistency and reports any catalog whose line endings are not the declared ones. Exits with code 1 if any issues found.

sync

dotnet elg sync [locale] [--project <csproj>]

Adds missing keys (with default values from the default locale) to locale files and re-orders keys to match the default locale. Preserves existing translations; a file whose keys are already in sync but whose line endings are not the configured ones is rewritten as well. When locale is omitted, syncs all non-default locales.

normalize

dotnet elg normalize [--project <csproj>]

Rewrites every catalog with the line endings output.lineEnding declares — the default locale included, which no other command writes. Use it when the option changes on an existing repository: declare the value, run normalize then gen, and commit the result on its own. It validates every catalog before writing any of them (a broken one leaves the tree unconverted rather than half converted) and never rewrites the config file itself, which would drop its comments. The command prints the .git-blame-ignore-revs step that keeps git blame readable.

Configuration

The i18n.jsonc file controls code generation. dotnet elg init writes the full set with each option's contract as a comment above the key:

The config is read strictly: an unknown group, an unknown key, a value of the wrong JSON kind and a value outside the allowed set each fail the run and name the file, the JSON path and — when one is close — the key that was probably meant. Locale files are the opposite: any key inside one is a string entry.

output.lineEnding defaults to "lf", so regeneration is byte-identical on every platform; declare "crlf" or "platform" when the repository needs them.
