WellKnown client library

A minimal .NET client for retrieving well-known artifacts (e.g. JWKS) from a WellKnown host.

Designed for services that need reliable, cached access to identity metadata.

Features

  • Fetch JSON Web Key Sets (JWKS) for JWT verification
  • Built-in caching with automatic refresh
  • Transparent local fallback for development

Installation

Install the Faactory.WellKnown package from NuGet:

dotnet add package Faactory.WellKnown

Usage

The minimal setup involves configuring the WellKnown client in your application’s service collection:

// Well-known artifacts
builder.Services.AddWellKnownArtifacts()
    .AddJwksArtifact();

The client will:

  • fetch JWKS from the configured WellKnown service
  • cache it in-memory
  • periodically refresh it

Set the service URL via:

WELL_KNOWN_URL=https://your-wellknown-service

Local Development

For local development, the recommended approach is to use a local JWKS source. The library automatically checks for a jwks.json file using a precedence order:

  • jwks.json (current working directory)
  • .jwks/jwks.json (JWKS in the current working directory)
  • ~/.jwks/jwks.json (JWKS in the user’s home directory)

A different local file path can also be specified via the LocalFilePath option when configuring the JWKS artifact:

builder.Services.AddWellKnownArtifacts()
    .AddJwksArtifact( options =>
    {
        options.LocalFilePath = "path/to/your/local/jwks.json";
    } );

When to Use

Use this library if:

  • you validate JWTs
  • you rely on JWKS from another service
  • you want caching + refresh handled for you
