Humble License for Umbraco

License verification and fail-open online check-in for Humble Starter Kit for Umbraco packages.

Installing a license

Download humble.lic from your account at https://umbracostarterkit.com/account and upload it in the Umbraco backoffice. That is the only supported installation flow. The package verifies the signed envelope before storing it in the Umbraco database, and never reads or writes licence, keyset-cache, or check-in-state files. There is no appsettings.json configuration surface.

Humble packages require a valid licence; without one, licensed functionality does not take effect.

Those values are set by the server and change over time, so they are documented on the website rather than restated here.

Telemetry

This package reports usage telemetry to https://umbracostarterkit.com/api/license/telemetry. Reporting is built in and has no configuration switch: every installation attempts to report, whether or not a licence is installed. This is deliberate, so it is stated here plainly before you install.

What is sent. Each report contains:

  • An installation id: a random identifier generated once and stored in the Umbraco database, so all servers of one installation (and restored copies of its database) share it. It is not derived from your hardware, your account, or any personal information.
  • The license id, when a license is installed. Unlicensed installations send no license id.
  • The number of active servers Umbraco reports for the installation.
  • The site's registered domain names with their culture codes. If no domains are registered, the hostname of the current request and the configured Umbraco application URL are used instead.
  • The running Umbraco version (major and minor only).
  • The names and versions of the loaded Humble Starter Kit for Umbraco packages.

It does not send user accounts, email addresses, content, form submissions, visitor data, or anything from your database beyond the items listed above.

When it is sent. On a schedule set by the licensing server and documented at https://umbracostarterkit.com/documentation. Reports are infrequent and back off on failure.

Failures never affect your site. Every report is a single best-effort attempt with a short timeout. If it cannot be sent — no internet access, a firewall, an outage — nothing happens: no warning, no license impact, no change in behavior. Telemetry can fail forever and the packages keep working exactly the same.

Why it exists. The data provides operational and licensing signals — how many installations exist, on which domains and versions — and is how possible license abuse is noticed. Anything that looks like abuse goes to a person: suspected abuse leads to contact and investigation, and confirmed abuse is resolved through human-led correction. Telemetry and abuse findings are not an automated enforcement mechanism.

Humble.Umbraco.ClientSideAdmin
