DocWright.Cryptography

Open and write password-protected Office documents: ECMA-376 agile and standard encryption, legacy Word 97 binary RC4 and RC4 CryptoAPI (read), and document-protection password hashes.

Uses only the .NET base class library — no third-party cryptography.

Add-on for DocWright.

Install

dotnet add package DocWright.Cryptography

The main DocWright package already includes this one, so if you have DocWright you can open encrypted documents without installing anything else.

Opening an encrypted document

Set the password on ConvertOptions and load normally — detection and decryption happen for you:

using DocWright;

var converter = new DocWrightConverter();
var options = new ConvertOptions { Password = "hunter2" };

using FileStream input = File.OpenRead("protected.docx");
using var document = converter.Load(input, FormatDetection.Auto, options);

The password is ignored for unencrypted input, so it is safe to set unconditionally.

Telling the failure modes apart

They mean different things and deserve different handling:

try
{
    using var document = converter.Load(input, FormatDetection.Auto, options);
}
catch (DocumentEncryptedException)
{
    // Encrypted, and no password was supplied.
}
catch (InvalidPasswordException)
{
    // Encrypted, password supplied, password wrong.
}

What reads

Scheme Support
ECMA-376 agile encryption Read and write
ECMA-376 standard encryption Read and write
Word 97 binary RC4 / RC4 CryptoAPI (.doc) Read
XOR obfuscation Not supported

Document-protection password hashes are also available for reading and setting the "protect document" state.

Resource limits

Key derivation is bounded by ResourceLimits.MaxKeyDerivationSpinCount, so a hostile file declaring an enormous spin count cannot hang the process.

DocWright.Formats.Doc

Legacy Word 97-2003 (.doc) reader for DocWright, including files encrypted with Office 97 RC4 or RC4 CryptoAPI. Read only — there is no .doc writer; open a legacy file and save it as .docx to modernise it. Most users should install the DocWright package instead, which includes this one.

DocWright

Convert, render and edit Word documents in .NET — no Microsoft Word, no Office interop, no native dependencies. Reads DOCX and legacy DOC, renders to PDF and PNG/JPEG, saves to DOCX, HTML, Markdown, RTF, text, ODT, EPUB and RDL, rasterizes existing PDFs, and edits documents through a mutable model with find/replace, placeholder filling, content controls and tracked changes. This is the main package: install it for the whole pipeline.
