McPowerShell

McPowerShell is a .NET Standard 2.0 library so the same package can be consumed from both:

  • Windows PowerShell 5.1 hosts
  • PowerShell 7+ hosts

Target strategy

The project targets:

  • netstandard2.0

The library compiles against PowerShellStandard.Library, which provides the shared PowerShell API surface intended for code that must run on both Windows PowerShell 5.1 and PowerShell 7+.

PowerShell SDK references

McPowerShell.csproj references:

  • PowerShellStandard.Library for compile-time compatibility

At runtime:

  • Windows PowerShell 5.1 hosts provide the Windows PowerShell implementation
  • PowerShell 7+ hosts provide the System.Management.Automation implementation

Why this approach

Because McPowerShell exposes PowerShell SDK types directly (PowerShell, PSObject, stream records, invocation state, etc.), the safest reusable contract is the PowerShell Standard surface shared by both hosts.

This keeps the library portable while allowing the host application to decide whether it runs against PowerShell 5.1 or PowerShell 7.

Consuming

  • A Windows PowerShell 5.1 host can consume the library from a .NET Framework-based host.
  • A modern .NET / PowerShell 7 host can consume the same library and provide the newer runtime implementation.
